Introduction to Linguistics
Professor Karen Steffen Chung
This course is required for DFLL students; others interested in registering for or auditing the course should speak with the professor on the first day of class.
Required textbook:
Tserdanelis, Georgios & Wai Li Peggy Wong, ed. Language Files: Materials for an Introduction to Language and Linguistics. 9th edition. Columbus: The Ohio State University Press, 2004. NT$550; purchase at Bookman Book 書林書店; ask for a class discount.
Supplements to the textbook will be provided on the class website. All students will be expected to bring questions on the assigned readings to class, so finishing the reading before attending class is absolutely necessary, though we may do some reading aloud from the textbook in class. Exercises will be assigned upon the completion of each chapter. Pop quizzes may be given at any time to test your understanding of the assigned reading. A 5-page paper on (a) two languages (4 pages) and (b) one linguist (1 page) will be required. A mid-term and final exam will be given.
Grade calculation:
Students will be graded on attendance (students with more than three unexcused absences or five tardinesses may not receive a grade for the course), class participation, homework and paper(s), quizzes, exams, attitude, and progress made.
